Today, I ran 6.85 miles at the Bonaventure and Greenwich cemeteries. Boo!
My run in these two cemeteries was wonderful. It is so serene and peaceful there…just as cemeteries should be, duh.
One thing Savannah does have are beautiful cemeteries along with magnificent old live oaks. Every oak tree in Savannah has a rich character. Their limbs stretch out like tentacles and their roots dig deep into the ground and hold Savannah together. All trees are beautiful things but none have character as the live oaks of Savannah.
I basically ran the roads (paved & unpaved) that follow the perimeter of each cemetery. I wasn’t sure what to expect in mileage logging so, I was pleasantly surprised that I scratched out the 6.85 miles. And, I realize that I can probably scratch out another 3 to 4 unique miles to add to 6.85 should I choose to another time.
One of the coolest things of all about this run is that the location is less than a mile from my house. I like that. Pictured above is my mapped run. I used the gps on my iphone to record the run and I’m glad that I did because it may have been difficult to map this run later on by memory.
Contrary to what you may be thinking, running in cemeteries is not creepy. And, to set you at ease, I did not see any zombies. What I did see were many people not only paying their respects to loved ones but sight seers, photographers, and people doing gravestone rubbing. A carload of thirty-something year old ladies pulled up beside me and asked if I knew where Johnny Mercer was buried. I shrugged I dunno and kept running.
The pictures you are seeing here were taken after my run. This place was so beautiful that after my run I went back through the cemeteries with my car, stopping along the way to snap a few shots.
I’m going to catch a movie tonight. So, I’m going to wrap up this blog in a few minutes. Let me just post a few more pictures.
Ok, let me do the wildlife inventory.
Wildlife inventory:
- fiddler crabs…no, just kidding. I didn’t see any fiddler crabs there. I’ve gotten so used to seeing fiddlers on my runs that I instinctually, typed out “fiddler crabs.” Isn’t that funny? I think so.
- 4 white Ibis
- 1 great egret
- 1 great blue heron
- 1 little blue heron
- 1 snowy egret
- 1 butterfly
- 2 squirrels
- 1 robin
- 2 cardinals (male & female)
- 1 zombie (just kidding)
That’s a lot of wildlife isn’t it? Yeah, it was awesome.
Ok, a few more and that’s it. I mean it!
Nice, eh?
I’m going to run out here tomorrow again. I’ll squeeze out a few more miles for tomorrow’s run. Its going to be awesome. Its nice to change up your running location every now and again. It keeps things more interesting.

Thanks for taking the time to read my running blog. Here’s another picture for good measure.
That’s it. Again, thanks.
Love, peace, & really cool live oaks,
