Cardio in the great indoors!

Cardio in the great indoors!

Another evening of indoor cardio exercising.  I tore it up in the gym today.  I hit the weights first and then the cardio.  I didn’t stretch, though.  That is not good.  Unlike Jeff Galloway, I think stretching after running is a very good thing to do but I didn’t do it today.  I’m a hypocrite, I guess.

By the time I finished my cardio I was soooo hungry!  All I kept thinking was about eating a box of Twinkies.  I know that’s bad for me and, believe me when I say that I don’t have a twinkie fetish.  I like twinkies and I almost always have a box of them in my house but that doesn’t mean that I’m addicted to them.  The problem is that the only movie that i have on my iphone is zombieland.  And, if you have seen zombieland then, you know the story behind the twinkies.  Have you seen zombieland?  If you haven’t, go see it!  Do not come back to my blog again until you have seen zombieland!  That’s an order..;)

Zombieland may very well be the best movie of 2009 next to the Hurt Locker, that is.  Its a very good movie -both are.

Anyway, the thing with the twinkies in zombieland is simply that through-out the movie Woody Harrelson’s character is in search of a twinkie and not just any twinkie but the last twinkie on earth to be enjoyed.  Believe it or not, Twinkies have an expiration date.  And, one day the twinkie gauge is going to go to empty. Everything I just said came from zombieland regarding twinkies.  Its a great movie.

And, to explain why zombieland and twinkies came up, its because when I’m on the elliptical I end up watching zombieland.  But, if I had another movie on my iphone I probably wouldn’t always crave a twinkie after exercising.  Get it?

My cardio reading of the day came from Rilke’s “Letters to a young poet”.  Very good stuff.  If you haven’t read this, you should -especially, if you like poetry or deep thinking stuff.  Hey, get the book.  If you’re seen with this book people will think you’re smart.  Its the only reason I carry it around.  That’s just the way it is.  Its another one of my gimmicks to impress the female gender of our species.  In truth, Rilke’s stuff is amazing.  I don’t see how anyone can read Rilke’s writings and not be impressed and/or changed.  His stuff touches your soul.  Good stuff.

Here’s some of Rilke’s stuff that I was reading this evening.  I found the underlined statement interesting, “there is not more beauty here than elsewhere, and all these objects which have been continuously admired for generations, which workmen’s hands have mended and restored, signify nothing, are nothing and have no heart and no worth; –but there is much beauty here, because there is much beauty everywhere.“  I thought that was a pretty hard punch to the gut.  Still though, I think I kind of get it…there is beauty everywhere (no doubt) but statues and fountains and buildings as impressive as they may be and, the volumes they say for their makers and the inhabitants of the culture they came from are just made of stone.  They have no heart.  They are not alive.  Beauty comes from the living -all things that live.  I’ll take the beauty of a sparrow hopping on a branch on a cold morning in my backyard any day over a soulless statue with empty eyes.  That’s my view, at least.  And, maybe I’m totally missing Rilke’s point.  Whatever.  This blog entry is about running and cardio and exercising and sweating and should have nothing to do with silly poetry and crap, right?  Right.

So, here’s my cardio breakdown for this evening’s workout…

  • treadmill: 2.18 miles
  • stationary bike: 7.21 miles
  • elliptical: 2.06 miles

calorie breakdown:

  • treadmill: 281.9 calories
  • stationary bike: 282 calories
  • elliptical: 243 calories

The total miles were: 11.45

The total calories were: 806.9

And, the time spent on each exercise was 20 minutes on each of the three starting with the treadmill and ending with the elliptical.

I’m really missing my outdoor runs.  I cannot wait for this weekend to log some miles outside.  I’m missing the wildlife inventory too.  Are you?  I mean, what do you think of my wildlife inventory?  Is it worthwhile?  Is it silly and/or stupid?  Is it super cool, like me?  I like it.  I like seeing critters when I run.  It adds to the fun.

Have a great tomorrow!

I gotta go light my menorah!  I forgot to last night!  uh oh, I’m a bad christian jew. btw, I’m drinking a killer chianti.  i’ll post about it tomorrow.  The bottle only cost $9.99

Thanks for taking the time to read my running blog.

Peace and wine,

dh
