Today Was a Good Run Day!

i took this pic on highway 80 with the island's expressway above me. It's kind of a dangerous location for a runner, I will admit. If you run here be very careful. Cars drive super fast!

Today, I had an enjoyable run!  Yeah, finally!  Prior to today’s run, the last two runs I did were just not fun.  Today, I changed locations and decided to run on Whitemarsh Island, where the Y is.  I ran the very nice and pretty Y trail and then caught Bryan Woods to Highway 80 to Whitmarsh Island road and then hooked back up with the Y trail and wrapped up a very pleasant 4.37 mile run.  I’m happy.

this is some of the scenery you'll run by on the Island's Y trail.

The run was not without discomforts, though.  That center part of the ball of my left foot again flared up.  I googled “pain in ball of my foot” and got a crapload of information on this condition.  Apparently, what I’m suffering from has a clinical name – metatarsalgia.  That’s quite a mouthful.  Mayo Clinic says, “excess pressure on your forefoot can cause pain and inflammation in your metatarsals — the long bones in the front of your feet, just below your toes.”  Yep, that’s it.  I definitely put a lot of stress on my forefeet due to running with bikilas.  Apparently, a remedy for this is rest and ice.  No rest for me.  So, icing will have to do.  Tonight, while I’m watching a movie I’ll dump a bunch of ice in my foot fixer machine (whatever that’s called)  and let my feet rumble in that contraption for a good while.

here's the metawhatever. this is what i suffer from.

I’m not going to run tomorrow.  Instead I”m going to get on my elliptical machine for 30 or 40 minutes.  On Saturday, I want to feel fresh and strong for the Crimestoppers 10k.  I want to finish this race in the top 10 overall like I’ve done before on this race.  Let’s see how that goes.  It’s supposed to be hot this weekend and I haven’t had any speed training at all this year.  My top ten goal may be very wishful thinking.

Wildlife Inventory:

  • 4 dogs
  • 7 grackles
  • 1 turkey duck with a bunch of baby turkey ducks.  If only the babies stayed cute instead of growing up and looking all warty and gross just like their parents.  They’ll all grow up ugly, I’m afraid.  Such is life.
  • 1 bug, unidentifiable bug.  It flew past me real fast.  It might of been a new species of bug for all I know.  Oh well.

That was it for the wildlife inventory.  This route usually does not produce much wildlife viewing opportunities but it’s still a nice route and there are always very attractive women running or walking the Y trail.  That’s always a plus. ;)

So, why was my run so enjoyable?  I don’t know.  Maybe, because I didn’t feel ill today like I did the last few days?  Maybe, because I needed a change in scenery?  There’s no telling why.  All I can say is that today was a good run day!  Yes!  I like these days!  Life is good!

Oh, this was fun.  I video taped a small leg of my run today.  It was on the Island’s Y new trail section.  It’s such a lovely trail.  If you haven’t checked it out you really should.  It’s really nice.  Warning, this video is a bit bumpy…

Well, I think it’s time to netflix a movie and soak my feet in the cold gurgling water of my foot fixer contraption.  I’ll drink a beer and eat a popsicle too.

Many thanks for stopping by.

All the very best for you and yours.

peace,

dh

    Hi Dan,

I’m an incoming SCAD graduate student and I found your blog while researching my professors (specifically Malcolm Kesson) and I saw in the Google results something about him running Comrades 5 times and had to click on it! Since then, I’ve been reading your blog (I love running blogs!). I’ve got a pair of Bikilas myself but haven’t had the nerve yet to try to switch over to them full time. My calves hate me every time I run in them!

I gather that you are A) a pretty quick runner and B) work at SCAD in some capacity and more to the point, really know the Savannah area. I’m not having a lot of luck with my contacts finding out about where to find an apartment that’s safe and convenient and so forth. If you have a minute and wouldn’t mind sharing some info, I’d love to hear what you have to say about the area (filled my email in on this comment). If not, I totally get it as this is probably extremely random!

Good luck in your 10k this weekend, hope the ice cures your foot issues!
