I’m coming back to blogging on my website. For awhile, I lost my desire to blog about my running and everything else that I used to blog about. The last few months, every now and then I broke down and blogged a little but not much. I even enjoyed a small stint with my dailymile but that got old quickly. I’m now back, though. And, I’m focused.
Earlier this year I began talking about “Run 4 a Reason”. This is something that my little 8 year old niece wrote on a prayer flag. Actually, her prayer flag read, “run for a reson”. When Grace came up with that flag I had been contemplating organizing an ultra marathon in Savannah benefiting the rails to trails. I had even talked to a friend of mine, Tim Waz, about this. The whole conversation was about how to set up a fund raising race at the rails to trails. I initially wanted to do a 24 hour race. Anyway, after about a week the whole idea went into deep freeze only to be thawed out toward the middle of the summer when another friend, Michelle Daniels, began her passionate plea to save the Rails to Trails. Michelle was able to galvanize the community and rally those of us that love the Rails to Trails in Savannah to do something to save the RTT. This led to meetings with Chatham County Commissioners and other officials. We formed a group called “Save our Rails to Trails Savannah” and we began voicing our love and our concern for the rapidly eroding RTT. The media got whiff of this and began to seek out these crazies that were screaming from the roof tops about doing something. Any way, things began to happen.
I’m telling you all of this because a month or two ago I set up an LLC company called “Run 4 a Reason” with the purpose of this business being all about organizing racing events to benefit some important cause. The first race that I’m organizing under Run 4 a Reason is the Savannah Rails to Trails 50k Ultra Marathon. This race is taking place on January 12, 2013 at the Rails to Trails and on Cockspur Island where Fort Pulaski is at. Fleet Feet Savannah and Low Country Ultras have graciously taken up our cause and are helping us make this race a reality! Just last week we were astonished and honored by Ernie Ledesma when he took up our cause and became the Title Sponsor for the Savannah Rails to Trails 50k Ultra Marathon! Can you believe it?!
So, now this event will be the Ledesma Sports Medicine Savannah Rails to Trails 50k Ultra Marathon! Quite a mouthful, eh? The LSM RtoT Ultra event will actually have three races, 3…Uno, dos, tres -THREE. The three races break down as follows: 50k, 25k, 5k. So, if a 50k is not your idea of fun then, there’s a 25k just for you or a lovely little 5k to satisfy the sole(s).
Also, South Magazine has taken up our cause as a sponsor. Hammer Nutrition has also joined our cause! It’s been an amazing and wonderful experience so far. We are looking for more sponsors. If you would like to be a sponsor of this first ever event in Savannah please contact me asap! I would love to talk with you!
So, do you want to see the course route of the 50k and 25k? Here it is:
The race begins in Fort Pulaski, winds around Cockspur Island a bit and then exits the island and catches the rails to trails. You run 5.6 miles on the rtt until you turn around at the western-most bridge and head back to Fort Pulaski. The 50k runners complete this route twice as opposed to once by the 25k runners. The 5k runners will basically use the “Run for Jane 5k route” in Fort Pulaski.
We also have a facebook page for the race: Savannah Rails to Trails 50k Ultra Marathon 2013
Lowcountry ultras is hosting our race on their website: LowCountry Ultras Rails to Trails 50k
Fleet Feet Savannah also has the race posted on their website: Fleet Feet Savannah Ultra page
And, here is where you register for the race: ultrasignup Rails to Trails 50k
Yeah, we’ve tried to cover all the bases.
So, a new company is born and with it a mission statement that I Run for a Reason other than to just make me happy. With my running I hope to make a positive difference in the world and in someone’s life.
My first race as Race Director will be the Savannah Rails to Trails 50k.
My next running challenge and race is Lowcountry Ultras’ Delirium 24 hour race on February 9th and 10th, 2013. With that race my goal is to run 100 miles in less than 24 hours and help raise awareness and funds for friend, Stu Schwartz’s girlfriend, Samantha Shanks who is in the fight of her young life against cancer. Please check out: “Raise Money for Sam’s Fight against cancer“. I’ll talk more about the 24 hour run on my next blog.
Thanks for stopping by.
All the best to you and yours.
