Count Down to Delirium 24 Hour Race: 9 Days to go…

This is my friend Karen, that’s going to be running the Delirium 24 hour race with me on Feb 9th and 10th

The countdown to the Delirium has begun for me.  Nine more days until I go for the gold.  In 9 more days I go after another super ultra, the Delirium 24 hour race where I will attempt to run 100 miles in less than 24 hours.  Actually, if we keep to Karen’s plan the 100 mile mark will be crossed at approximately 20 hours and 20 minutes (about 6:20 am on Sunday, Feb 10th).

Who’s Karen, you ask?  Well, I’m glad that you asked!  Karen is one of the baddest ultra runners I know and most definitely, the prettiest!

Karen is a friend of mine that’s coming down from Charleston to also run the Delirium 24 hour race in Bluffton on Feb. 9th and 10th of the Lord’s year, 2013.  She’s an amazing athlete with quite a few impressive running feats accomplished.  She’s the lady that ran a 250k a few months ago and won!  And, she ran the 250k in Luna sandals!

I first met Karen at the Cremator 50 miler in July of last year and she ran that race in VFF’s.  She is a serious badass!  And, I am so stoked that she is willing to team up with me for the Delirium so that we may keep each other going when the going gets tough.  And, believe me, the going will get tough!  So, it’s going to be great having a strong, seasoned runner like Karen helping me along the way.

I’m seriously going to need a lot of help to meet the goal of 100 miles in less than 24 hours because I  just haven’t trained as I should for this race.  This is truly the most unprepared I’ve ever been for a race, I believe.  Still though, I’m going for it.  Why?  Because if there is anything that I know about myself it is that I can endure a great deal of discomfort when I fix my sites on a goal.  I do not easily give up.  I can go and go and go no matter how much it hurts once I focus on the end goal.  I’ve proven it to myself many times through-out the years.

There’s no special skill to pushing yourself until you succeed in achieving your goal.  You just have to will yourself to go on when the going gets tough.  We all have that capability but we do not all seem to tap into it.  Once you do tap into it, though, the world becomes a much more invigorating place!  Believe me, it’s true!

So, although, I am not quite prepared for this race physically, I am prepared mentally.  And, knowing that a badass runner like Karen is going to be there running alongside me gives me great encouragement to go and go and go.

This evening I ran 7 miles on a treadmill at the Island’s Ymca with my brand new VFF Spyridon’s.  It wasn’t a pretty run, I’m afraid.  The balls of my feet were on fire the last two miles due to friction from pounding the treadmill conveyor belt over and over and over again and again and again!  But, I ran for an hour and that was my intention.

Yesterday, I ran at Daffin Park for 4.9 miles but my calves continually cramped on me.  Today, I did not have that problem thankfully.  I’m going to run tomorrow but don’t know if it will be inside or outside.  Actually, I am going to run every single day until Friday, February 8th.  That Friday will be my only rest day between now and the Delirium 24 hour hoe down!

I’ll be back tomorrow!

Thanks for stopping by.

All the very best.
